TellThemWhatYouThink doesn't work very well anymore

This site was set up in 2008, to help people find Government consultations more easily, and to show that it could be done: quickly and easily. The site has never been funded as such, and has relied on volunteers for maintenance and support. It hasn't had much maintenance recently and this shows: some consultations can't be found and some functions don't work as they should. We are currently seeking funding for a new version of TellThemWhatYouThink.

In the meantime, you can search a limited number of departments for open consultations at the Directgov Consultation Finder.

API Functions

API/XML

TellThemWhatYouThink's data is accessible using an API. The requests detailed here allow you to list, search and view the same data as is available on this site.

Overview

All requests take a number of parameters, in the following format:

http://data.tellthemwhatyouthink.org/api/dispatch.php?function=function&output=output&other_variables

The current version of the API is 1.0. If it is changed in the future, it will be possible to specify a version as an argument, so you can still use the old version.

Outputs

Two output formats are currently supported: It's fairly easy to write new output layers for the API -- if you'd like the data in another format, feel free to ask, but be forewarned: you might be asked to do it :)

All API functions emit a Last-Modified HTTP header, to facilitate caching. Please do cache our data if at all possible. We check for new consultations once per day, overnight: updates will not occur during the day, or more than once per day, except in exceptional circumstances.

Licensing

Most of the data held by TellThemWhatYouThink is subject to Crown Copyright. A general waiver exists permitting its reuse.

Low-volume, non-commercial use of the API is free. Please get in touch if you'd like to use it commercially or on a large scale.

Bindings

These make it easier to access the API in a particular language:

If you've written a binding for another language, get in touch and we'll link to it.

I cribbed most of my ideas for the API from TheyWorkForYou.com -- thanks guys!
